Serendipitous webbing brought me to the story of Don Allum's solo Atlantic crossing in 1987. Newfoundland to Achill Island off the west coast of Ireland, complete with being pulled to shore by the locals at the end of the journey. Interesting read:

The UK's forgotten acoustic defence system

The remnants of the acoustic defence system that once guarded England’s shores epitomise time’s contempt for technology. In the years between the invention of the aeroplane and that of radar, giant listening devices were constructed to capture the sound of approaching enemy aircraft. Initially, the sound locators took the form of huge ear trumpets: hybrids between Heath Robinson ingenuity and Terry Gilliam absurdity. Soon, however, these Edwardian follies mutated into the concrete Modernism of ‘acoustic mirrors’, some of which still stand, half-cocked to the sky, listening out across the Channel.

Here's part of a Chris Watson interview found in a recent Pitchfork article on field recordings:

I was in Kyoto, and I came across this concept of using captive crickets to sing to produce music. This goes back to the 15th century in the emperor's palace in Kyoto, where, at that time of year, they would bring in different species of crickets and hang them in the palaces in tiny bamboo cages. And when they got to certain temperatures and the light got to a certain level, these insects would sing. It even got to the stage where some of the women in the palaces would attach these little cages to their clothing and carry them around. It was like a 15th-century iPod. They were carrying this music with them, and they would carry this music through the courtyards with these singing insects.

I’m curious about your thoughts on universal access to the entire recorded music library, and how that may change the way we experience music.

Well, it certainly has changed things for me, because one of the things I notice that often happens now in the studio when I’m working with other people, is that we’ll mention something -- ‘Do you remember that song by so-and-so? No, you haven’t heard it? Oh, well, listen.’ We suddenly refer to music a lot in a way that never used to happen.

When you went into the studio in the past, you went to a space that was actually, deliberately sealed off from music, because the only music you were supposed to be hearing in there was yours. And this sudden thought that the whole library of recorded music is there and available to you as reference material, really, I think that’s changed the way people work a lot. So as a composer, I think it makes a really big difference, because it sort of erases history in a way.

In the past, you would of course know what’s going on contemporaneously, but it was a bit of a job to find something from 1962 or 1947 or something like that. But now it’s all there, it’s all equally present, equally current, in a sense, so I think that really changes the way people think about the music that they’re doing. They don’t so much think now of certain styles being unacceptably old fashioned, and certain other styles being wonderfully, interestingly new. You make your own patchwork quilt.

It implements freedom of choice as a mode of control; our identities are “unfinished” but contained by the site, which ensures that more and more of our social energy is invested in self-presentation—selling ourselves like we are consumer goods.
